Welcome To The New TWICE

By Steve Smith -- TWICE, 8/30/2010

As promised in our July 19 issue, the TWICE staff, along with our parent company NewBay, thought it was about time for the print edition of TWICE to undergo a redesign.

If you are a longtime reader of TWICE, you know that we change with this ever-evolving industry, adding or subtracting the types of products we cover, so a redesign shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

We didn’t give the old girl a makeover for just cosmetic reasons. (In truth, the print edition isn’t that old. She’s only 24, born around this time of year in 1986.) We wanted this new design to acknowledge and reflect the new media landscape we are all part of.

It has been about a decade since we put through our last redesign — October 2001 — an eon or two in the publishing industry. Back then, the Internet did exist and TWICE.com was around, but daily email newsletters and breaking news blasts were rare. Reader contributions were more of the “Letters to the Editor” variety, and the phrase “social media” had not yet been coined. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube weren’t around, and you couldn’t access the web with your cellphone either.

TWICE’s new features reflect this change in media. One is comments from readers like you. We will take a look at Talkbacks submitted by you on TWICE. com about the latest stories and will include a few of them in print. There will be occasional commentary by our editorial team about the industry, upcoming events, or referrals to TWICE.com and other sites on related stories.

Upfront is a new section that highlights recent stories that you need to know, or you need to know more about. TWICE One-On-One will be a periodic feature with our editors talking with top industry execs about news and trends. Tim Baxter of Samsung is the first exec to be featured. And we have revamped and expanded the TWICE Stock Index to show how individual product categories and companies are faring.

What hasn’t changed in TWICE? It is still organized by product sections. And they are written by the best, most experienced editorial team covering the CE industry today.

Many thanks to Tony Savona, editorial/ creative director, and Adrienne Knapp, assistant art director, marketing/ custom publishing, of NewBay for developing this design, as well as managing editor John Laposky, associate editor Lisa Johnston and freelance designer Desiree Nunez for implementing it.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about our new design, please let us know what you like and what you don’t because TWICE is as much yours as it is ours.
