YES, DirecTV Team on 3D
Panasonic to sponsor two Yankees broadcasts in July
By Glen Dickson -- TWICE, 5/5/2010
Regional sports network YES and pay-TV operator DirecTV announced a 3D programming initiative Wednesday (May 5).
DirecTV is launching four 3D channels, including ESPN 3D, in June, and had already said it will air the 2010 All-Star Game in 3D, in partnership with Fox Sports.

For Mr. Hartfelder-
From the Houston area, I can say our experiences have mirrored yours. But the real answer is not cheaper glasses or TV's. It is for the displays to be able to give 3-D by themselves, without glasses. There have been various announcements in the background over the past 2-3 years regarding such technologies, so I have been telling customers to give it another 3 years. We are still going to sell plenty of these TV's based on their performance as regular 2-D displays. But trying to sell them for the 3-D would be like trying to sell a Mercedes for its cup holder. (These discussions with customers have actually given us a very effective avenue to differentiate ourselves from the box-droppers, by showing how we don't waste their money on unproven products. Sitting in front of a Best Buy certainly helps make the point. We are thinking of putting up a sign that says "Come find out what 3-D is NOT!")

As a home theater integrator (www.diamondcase.com) I'm curious to see what the opinions of other integrators and their customers are. We are starting to see customers asking about 3D but none of them have really understood what is necessary to enjoy it (source, display, and glasses). Almost everyone 'thinks' the glasses are the inexpensive kind not realizing they will spend $150+ per pair. I have also had a couple of people reference the warning Samsung posted on-line about watching while drinking, being epileptic, etc. The misinformation that is out there and Samsungs warning have turned customer interest tepid at best.
I think we will be able to change much of that as the cost comes down (mainly on glassses) and the programming increases.
What is your experience?
