iPad Quickly Gets Plethora Of Accessories

By Lisa Johnston -- TWICE, 2/8/2010

Just a few hours after Apple's introduction of the iPad, accessories companies lined up to share plans for protecting and accessorizing the tablet computer.

(For reaction to the iPad's introduction, see coverage on p. 1.)

iLuv debuted a line of fashion-inspired cases that will be available in February, including the iCC806 leather case (black or pink for $39.99), the iCC805 casual fabric case with band holder ($39.99) and the iCC803 clear case ($29.99).

Also available from iLuv will be a case

with Tatz Graphics in three colors ($34.99), a Flexi-Clear case with a dot-wave pattern ($29.99), and silicone cases in several colors ($24.99). iLuv also debuted protective films for the iPad and a line of water-resistant neoprene sleeves ($19.99).

Griffin announced it would be offering versions of its Elan Passport, Elan Sleeve, FlexGrip, Jumper neoprene sleeve, and a screen care kit for the iPad.

Griffin's “first collection” of iPad accessories will be available in the spring, the company said. Prices will be as follows: Elan Passport, $49.99; Elan Sleeve, $49.99; FlexGrip, $29.99; Jumper for Apple iPad, $29.99; and screen care kit, $24.99.

Belkin introduced three neoprene sleeves for the iPad: theVue, Max and Grip. The 10-inch sleeves feature reinforced panels to protect the iPad's touchscreen, and provide storage for other media devices or ear buds. All three are said to have soft interior linings.

The three cases will be available in the spring for the following prices: Vue, $39.99; Max, $39.99; and Grip, $29.99.

A screen overlay from Belkin will also be available for $19.99.

Scosche said it would be offering a version of its KickBack stand and case for the iPad. The “shatterproof” polycarbonate and rubber case features a locking kickstand that lets the iPad be used in vertical and horizontal viewing. It also has molded grips on the back of the case, and a low-angle setting for an optimal typing position, Scosche said.

It will ship in “early-mid spring,” the company said, and is the first of a line of accessories Scosche said it was planning. Pricing wasn't available at press time.

Cocoon Innovations introduced a messenger sling for the iPad known as the Gramercy. Features include a windowed media pocket and the company's Grid-It organization system, which includes a “weave of rubberized elastic bands that acts as an object retention system to keep additional accessories and personal items in place,” the company said.

Three colors are offered: black with yellow, gray with orange, and red with brown. They will be available in April for a $29.99 suggested retail.

Tom Bihn, a Seattle-based manufacturer of laptop cases, unveiled the Cache sleeve for the iPad.

The Cache features ¼-inch-thick foam padding laminated with an exterior of four-ply Taslan and an interior of brushed tricot, the company said. It will reportedly ship within 10 days of release of the iPad for a $30 suggested retail.
