Casio Adds Digital Cameras, Photo Frames

By David Elrich -- TWICE, 1/25/2010

Casio added four digital cameras and a new series of digital photo frames at the recent International CES.

In a press conference at the show, company founder Kazuo Kashio waxed poetic in Japanese via a translator about the artistic potential of the new Digital Art Frames which have eight built-in special effects filters. At a touch, consumers can render their snapshots to supposed works of art.

Along with the filters, the frames feature pre-loaded Adobe Flash Lite content such as clocks as calendars to further personalize the displays.

The new frames have 10.2-inch WSVGA screens, 2GB of internal memory to store images, an SD/SDHC slot and wireless LAN capability. The suggested retail price is estimated to be around $300.

Casio executive VP John Homlish introduced the new cameras. The top model is the EX-FH100 with a 10.1-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor. It is the newest addition to the Exilim High-Speed series and captures 9-megapixel images at 40 fps for up to 30 images. It also records movies at 1,000 fps so consumers can, for example, capture and analyze a golf swing. The $349 camera has a wide-angle 10x zoom.

The three additional digicams have 14.1-megapixel CCD imagers and the Dynamic Photo feature that lets consumers edit and combine images in camera; the company's new Exilim Engine 5.0 handles the processing chores.

The EX-H15 ($299) has a wide-angle (24mm) 10x zoom, a 3-inch LCD rated 460K pixels and CCD sensor shift stabilization. The EX-Z2000 ($199) has a 26mm 5x zoom and a similar LCD. The $169 EX-Z550 features a 26mm 4x zoom and a 2.7-inch screen.

The new line will begin shipping in April or May.
