Acer Takes Over As No. 2 PC Shipper

El Segundo, Calif. — The research firm iSuppli has marked Acer as the No. 2 worldwide computer maker for the third quarter, knocking Dell out of that spot and into third place.
Hewlett-Packard retained the No. 1 slot, while Lenovo and Toshiba filled out the rest of the top five slots.
iSuppli said Acer's accomplishment marks the first time an Asian computer manufacturer has ranked so high on its chart.
“Acer's rise to the No. 2 rank in the global PC business reflects not only its strong performance in the notebook segment but also the historic rise of Asia as a primary force in the computer industry,” said iSuppli's Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, computer platforms research.
Acer's computer shipments jumped 16.6 percent in the third quarter, compared with the same period in 2008, and 31 percent compared with the second quarter of 2009. Shipments totaled 10.7 million for the period.
HP saw its worldwide shipments increase 7 percent to 10.9 million, while Dell continued to struggle with its shipments falling off 5.9 percent. This is the 13th consecutive quarter that HP has been the No. 1 PC shipper, according to iSuppli.
Lenovo also enjoyed a healthy quarter. Its shipments rose 17.2 percent on shipments of 6.9 million. Fifth-place Toshiba's shipments rose 9.7 percent to 4 million.
Overall, the third quarter was good to the PC industry. iSuppli reported that the 1.1 percent gain by the entire category for the quarter was the first time in almost a year that unit shipments were up on a year-over-year comparison. In addition, computer shipments rose 19 percent over the previous quarter, the highest such increase iSuppli has marked since it began tracking the category in 2003.
The research firm attributed this success to the continued popularity of notebook computers, which it said managed to generate growth every quarter despite the worldwide recession.
iSuppli expects that when the year closes, PC shipments will have suffered a minor 0.9 percent decline for 2009. Previously, the company had forecast a 4 percent decline.
