Samsung Omnia Upgrade Arrives

Basking Ridge, N.J. — Verizon Wireless has begun offering its second-generation Samsung Omnia smartphone, the touchscreen-only Omnia II, which adds AMOLED display, second-generation TouchWiz user interface and Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.
It replaces the original Omnia, a touchscreen-only model equipped with an earlier generation Windows Mobile OS.
The Omnia II, unveiled by Samsung in June, became available Dec. 2 at $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate, which takes the form of a debit card. A two-year contract is also required.
The Omnia 2 is promoted as offering the industry's largest AMOLED cellphone display at 3.7 inches. The 2.0 version of its TouchWiz user interface adds motion response, six-sided rotating-cube display, downloadable widgets, three customizable widget screens, and ability to access select applications even when the phone is in locked mode. The user interface is also more deeply integrated with the phone's applications and features. The device accesses Samsung's Widget Store, which lets users download hundreds of free widgets.
