Clear's 4G Service Expands to 27 Markets

Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 12/1/2009

Kirkland, Wash. - Clearwire has launched Clear-branded 4G Mobile WiMAX service in 10 more markets, bringing its service to 27 markets with a population of more than 30 million people.

"The 27 markets complete the build plan we've outlined for 2009," a Clearwire spokesperson said. The 10 new markets are Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio and Austin, Texas; Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, N.C.; Chicago; Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii; and Seattle/Puget Sound.

Earlier this year, the company vowed to expand its network by the end of 2010 to 80 markets covering 120 million people.

In Clearwire's markets, Clear-branded service is available through Clearwire-owned stores, Clear.com, and such dealers as Best Buy, Radio Shack and Frys. The company also sells WiMAX service on a wholesale basis to its investors, including Sprint, Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Bright House Networks. All but Bright House offer service today, Clearwire said.

In all of the new markets except for those in Seattle and Hawaii, the company had been selling service online for a few weeks, "but as of today we have retail and full service operations available in all 10 markets, bringing our total to 27 nationally," the spokesman said.

Clear's network delivers average mobile download speeds of 3-6Mbps with bursts exceeding 10Mbps, the company said.

Service is available through a variety of devices, including a 4G desktop modem, a 4G USB modem, 3G/4G USB modem, and WiMAX-embedded laptops available direct from manufacturers and through other channels.

Clear's other markets are Atlanta and Milledgeville, Ga.; Baltimore; Boise, Idaho; Las Vegas; Philadelphia; Portland, Ore; and the Texas markets of Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Waco and Wichita Falls.
