Cameras Revamp At Office Depot; Wii Goes 'Sporty'

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 11/23/2009

Office Depot has overhauled its digital imaging assortment and in-store displays. The office-supply chain is now offering 24 digital camera models from Canon, Kodak, Nikon and Sony, and is rolling out new fixturing to present them. The new SKUs will also be available at www.officedepot.com.

The in-store displays group the cameras into four categories: basic point-and-shoot, “advanced slim and stylish,” “high zoom” and d-SLR. Plaques describe the models' various features, including resolution, LCD screen size and zoom capability. Office Depot said the setup was designed to help customers “quickly and clearly select the digital camera that fits their individual needs.”

“Whether you are a small business in need of a camera for the office, or a seasoned photographer looking for a professional-quality product, Office Depot has a large assortment of digital cameras to select from,” said Steve Mahurin, the chain's merchandising executive VP. “With the expanded product selection and simplified shopping experience, Office Depot customers will find the product they want quickly and at a great value.”

In other merchandising news, Sports Authority will begin carrying Nintendo's Wii gaming systems, including Wii Fit Plus and assorted titles and accessories, this month at 102 stores. The retailer's remaining 453 stores will receive the gaming platform this spring.

The sporting goods chain is presenting Wii within an interactive “experience” area staffed by branded fitness trainers, the companies said. Sports Authority president David Campisi described the partnership as “the intersection of fitness and interactive gaming,” while Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo's marketing executive VP, said the deal gives fitness fans “a convenient location to find fitness-related Nintendo products.”
