Foster City, Calif. - Sony said on Monday it will add the Netflix streaming video service to the PlayStation3 video game console in November, catching up with Microsoft's rival Xbox 360 device which already accesses the service.
Sony said its video game console will be able to stream many of the movies and television programs from the large Netflix online library to U.S. users with unlimited Netflix video rental accounts ($8.99 per month) at no extra cost.
Currently, Microsoft's Xbox offers Netflix access, but users must pay $50 a year for an Xbox Live Gold membership.
To start, PS3 users will be able to access the Netflix service using a special Blu-ray disc. Eventually, the capability will be supported with a software update.
