Cellphone Supplier PCD Adding Converged Devices

Hauppauge, N.Y. - Personal Communications Devices (PCD) is expanding beyond cellphones and cellular modem to offer netbooks, mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and other converged devices with embedded cellular.
The products fall under the company's newly formed advanced devices division.
The division's first products, displayed at the recent CTIA convention, consist of two netbooks. One of the two Haier-made netbooks incorporated only Wi-Fi, while the other featured Wi-Fi and embedded 3G cellular. PCD expects one or both netbooks to be available through a carrier in the first quarter. The 3G model can be activated on the Verizon Wireless, Cricket and AT&T networks, a spokesperson noted.
In netbooks and MIDs, the company will focus on selling through carriers, but the company will consider sales to retailers or VARs if opportunities arose, the spokesperson added.
Other types of converged devices, including MIDs, were not on display at the show but are in the works.
Outside the advanced devices division, PCD diversified its portfolio with the launch of a GPS-equipped wireless monitoring and tracking device. The tracking device will be available through FreightWatch Security Net, which provides consumer and enterprise-class covert tracking services.
