Taipei, Taiwan - A new "WikiReader" palm-sized device at $99 embeds 3 million Wikipedia articles in a handheld, so users can access information on the go without the need for a cellular connection.

Offered by Openmoko, the handheld became available Tuesday at Amazon.com and http://thewikireader.com. It is expected to be carried by other retailers in 2010, said a spokeswoman.
The device turns on instantly and has a touchscreen allowing users to scroll through articles with a finger stroke. Users can update the device through a connection to a PC, or through a biannual subscription to MicroSD card updates for $29.
"We created the WikiReader to be fun, easy, informative and entertaining for all ages," said Openmoko CEO Sean Moss-Pultz.
