Navigon Mulls iPhone Kit

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 9/30/2009

Chicago - Navigon said it is still evaluating a launch of a GPS-mounting kit for the iPhone for the U.S. market under its own brand.

Although it recently partnered with Kensington to create a universal mounting kit for all GPS brands, due for release Nov. 3 in Apple Stores, Navigon's president of the Americas Michael Roach said, "We're still evaluating the U.S. market ... We're leaving the option open right now," noting that a Navigon kit is still planned for Europe, possibly this month.

Kensington announced recently it had partnered with Navigon to create a $39 car mount that is designed to work with any GPS app on the iPhone by amplifying the sound so turn-by-turn directions are easier to hear. The kit affixes the iPhone to a windshield or vent and delivers volume twice as loud without causing drain on the iPhone's battery, said Kensington.

The Navigon logo will appear on the kit's packaging along with screen shots of the Navigon turn-by-turn GPS app on the App Store.

Navigon claimed its MobileNavigator GPS app is the highest-grossing paid app on the Apple App Store.
