Sharp Delivers Newspapers To Aquos LCD TVs In Japan

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 9/30/2009

Tokyo - Sharp said it will demonstrate at next week's CEATEC show an electronic newspaper service designed to deliver print-style newspaper pages to specially enabled Aquos LCD television sets, according to a Nikkei Electronics news report.

Testing for the system, called Mainichi Shimbun x DoTV, started in Japan Tuesday and will enable Aquos TV viewers to read the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun via "DoTV," which is NTT Communications' portal site for TVs, on the same day the paper is issued.

Nikkei said the service is provided by The Mainichi Newspapers and NTT Communications, and is targeted at Internet-enabled Aquos TV sets.

The system presents five pages of the morning edition of the newspaper beginning at 5:30 every morning in the same layout as the print edition.

For the test, different advertisements replaced ads from the print edition, and included spots sold by NTT Communications' in addition to Sharp's own advertisements, Nikkei reported.

Viewers can enlarge the paper on screen for easier reading using the set's remote control. In addition, the system will audibly read the main articles of the paper for the viewer using automatic voice-synthesis technology.

The companies said the service will be offered in Japan for free for six months beginning Tuesday, as they try to gauge the response of consumers.

No plans were revealed for a similar service in the U.S.
