Study Finds Keen e-Reader Interest

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 9/29/2009

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Retrevo, a consumer electronics shopping Web site, said a recent study of online users found that one-fifth expect to purchase an electronic book reader this year.

The site said 21 percent of respondents intend to buy an e-reader in 2009, a more significant percentage than those planning to buy an MP3 player.

More specifically, 26 percent of male respondents plan to buy an e-reader and 17 percent of female respondents plan to purchase one this year.

Survey respondents were 771 online users who were generally randomly picked.

Customers said they favored Amazon's Kindle over a Sony reader by a 2-to-1 margin.

Most of the interest in e-readers is in the 25- to 34-year-old age group, where 40 percent expect to buy an e-reader this year.  The figure falls to 29 percent in the "under 25" age group, and to 22 percent in the 35-44 year old age bracket. For the "45 and older" group, only 10 percent said they planned to buy an e-reader this year.

The most interest in e-readers also came from the Northeast, followed by the West and was strongest in the $100,000 to $200,000 annual income level.
