M. Rothman's Has Sellout At Yankees' New Home

By Steve Smith -- TWICE, 9/28/2009

The New York Yankees may have been on the road last Tuesday, but its ballpark in the Bronx was still hopping.

M. Rothman & Co. held its Annual Dealer Appreciation Event in the two-level Legends Suite Club at the Yankees' new home, which drew in excess of 300 retailers nationwide and more than 30 manufacturers who were showing their latest wares, according to executives with the distributor.

Manufacturers such as LG Electronics, Toshiba, Sharp, NuVision, jWin, Coby, Omnimount, JVC, Harman, Pioneer and many more exhibited.

Stephen Bodnarchuk, associate VP/national accounts for M. Rothman, said that such retailers as QVC, ShopNBC, J&R Music World and Electronics Expo, among others, visited the show to check manufacturer lines, not only for the fourth quarter but for 2010 as well.

“We are already planning for next year, and so are our retailers and manufacturers,” Bodnarchuk said.

When asked about the fourth quarter and how M. Rothman's customers view it, he noted, “They think that it will be tough, but there are opportunities in emerging categories as well as in Blu-ray and LCD TVs.”

As far as inventories go, Bodnarchuk said his company's view is that “manufacturers have planned well ... We don't believe there will be [widespread] shortages.”

Asked about reports that the fourth quarter will be marked by deeper than normal price cuts, he said, “We've heard stories about that, but we believe that the fourth quarter is always competitive. But we also believe that manufacturers can open new channels ... that will provide opportunities for them and retailers.”

M. Rothman is also looking for categories outside of CE products, namely in housewares. Bill Rothman, executive VP, said the company has “expanded our housewares offerings to 30 lines,” has created a new division for the category, and added it because of better profit opportunities.
