Longtime Silo Exec Sotoloff Dies At 78

New York — Al Sotoloff, longtime Silo Appliance City executive, died on Sept. 3. He was 78.
Sotoloff retired from Silo in 1982 after a long career with the chain, eventually becoming executive VP.
Silo, a member of the NATM Buying Group for many years, was founded in the late 1940s and was a powerhouse retailer in the Philadelphia area until the 1990s when it attempted to go national. One of Silo’s claims to fame was as one of the first electronics/appliance chains that operated in a big-box format.
In recognition for Sotoloff’s service to the industry, the Anti-Defamation League’s CE/Major Appliance Industries division presented him with its Torch of Liberty award in 1986.
Sotoloff, who lived in Boca Raton, Fla., and Margate City, N.J., is survived by his wife, Laurette; a daughter and two sons; a brother; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
