Brother Revamps Home, SO/HO Lines

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 9/16/2009

New York - Brother International has introduced three inkjet all-in-one printers and a new family of LED-based color and all-in-one printers.

The eight new models all feature space- and ink-saving designs and are expected to ship in mid-September.

Brother MFC-495Brother's MFC-495CW inkjet printerThe inkjet models, the MFC-295CN MFC-495CW and the MFC-795CW, range in price from $99 to $179. These feature a new low-profile look thanks to a new ink-delivery system that places the four-ink cartridge system in front of, instead of above, the print head, said Marie Le, Brother's inkjet products senior marketing manager.

The entry-level MFC-295CN, $99, prints at 33 ppm black, 27 ppm color, and is networked via Ethernet.

The step-up $129 MFC-495CW adds a 3.3-inch LCD, Wi-Fi capability and the ability to simultaneously scan several documents or photos. An ink-saving technology prints a scaled-down outline of the document with limited color.

The MFC-795CW has a built-in answering machine and phone along with a larger, 5-inch LCD.

A smaller desktop footprint was also a key design feature with the LED-based small- and home-office products, said Jeff Sandler, Brother's laser products marketing director.

Utilizing the LED engine enabled Brother to reduce the footprint of the five new models yet deliver the same performance as a laser-based printer, he said.

The HL-3040CN, $299, prints at 17 ppm for color and monochrome at a 600 by 2,400 dpi resolution. It has an adjustable 250-sheet paper capacity and Ethernet and USB 2.0 connectivity. The HL-3070CW, $349, adds built-in Wi-Fi and a USB direct interface, allowing direct printing from a USB drive.

The all-in-one MFC-9010CN, $399, has the same printing specifications as the above models, but adds scanning and copying features.  The $449 MFC-9120CN adds Super G3 fax capability.

The top-end MFC-9320CW adds Wi-Fi capability and carries a $499 price tag.
