Transcend Adds 'Eco-Friendly' USB Drives
Los Angeles — Transcend added to its line of USB flash drives with the introduction of the JetFlash V70.
Said to be made of a durable eco-friendly silicone rubber, the drive is engineered to be resistant to shock, splashes and dust. Transcend said the drive fully meets U.S. military drop-test standards (MIL-STD-810F 516.5—Transit Drop). It comes with a tethered cap holder.
The drives will be offered in 16GB (red), 8GB (orange) and 4GB (purple) capacities. The company did not respond to requests for pricing and availability as of this posting.
Corsair Debuts High-Speed 128GB USB Flash Drive
Fremont, Calif. — Corsair announced the availability of what it is calling “the world's fastest 128GB USB flash drive,” the Flash Voyager GT.
The drive boasts read speeds of up to 32MBps and write speeds of up to 25.6MBps, with the limiting factor effectively being the speed of the USB 2.0 bus and operating system overhead, according to Corsair.
The Flash Voyager GT employs a dual-controller architecture to achieve single-level cell levels of performance using less expensive multi-level cell NAND flash memory.
“High performance is a key requirement for super-high capacity flash drives, such as the 128GB Voyager GT, simply because it is able to store such a large volume of data,” said John Beekley, Corsair's applications VP. “The 128GB Voyager GT is nearly twice as fast as other high-capacity flash drives, which means less time waiting for your music, video or office files to copy to and from the drive.”
The Voyager GT utilizes a water-resistant rubber housing to protect the drive against accidental damage.
The 128GB Flash Voyager GT is available immediately from Corsair's authorized distributors and resellers worldwide.
Verbatim Unveils Tuff-Clips
Charlotte, N.C. — Verbatim introduced its Tuff-Clip USB drives earlier this month, meant to pair data storage with “clip-and-go” convenience.
Offered in 4GB (turquoise) and 8GB (black) capacities, the Tuff-Clip drives have a plastic enclosure with a retractable slider, a carabineer clip, and preloaded password security software for Windows systems.
The drives are said to measure 2.9 inches by 0.45 inches by 0.9 inches, and weigh less than 2 ounces.
They are currently available for suggested list prices of $29.99 for the 4GB drive and $49.99 for the 8GB.
Toshiba Debuts 64GB SDXC Memory Card
Tokyo — Toshiba announced the launch of what it is calling “the world's first 64GB1 SDXC memory card capable of operating at the world's fastest data transfer rate for reading and writing to a flash-memory card. “
The new card is the first to hit the market compliant with the new SD memory standard, version 3.00 UHS104, which brings a new level of ultra-fast read and write speeds to NAND flash-based memory cards: a maximum write speed of 35MBps and a read speed of 60MBps.
According to Toshiba, the combination of large storage capacities and increased data transfer rates will meet the needs of CE applications, such as digital still cameras and digital camcorders, that require high bandwidth data transfer. For example, d-SLR cameras will be able to shoot longer continuous bursts in the RAW format. Similarly, with these cards, it will be possible to download a 2.4GB video in about 70 seconds. Toshiba also unveiled 32GB and 16GB versions. They will be available in Q4.
