Logitech Debuts Mice That Can Be Used On Glass

By Lisa Johnston -- TWICE, 8/24/2009

Logitech said it released two mice earlier this month that can track “virtually anywhere.”

The Performance mouse MX and Anywhere mouse MX both feature the company's Darkfield Laser Tracking technology, which is said to use dark field microscopy to detect microscopic particles and micro-scratches on surfaces, rather than tracking the surface itself. This means the mice can operate on glass — a notoriously difficult mousing surface — as long as the glass is at least 4mm thick.

The products are likely to be seen as an alternative to Microsoft Hardware's mice with BlueTrack technology, which offers similar claims of being able to track on nearly any type of surface.

The Logitech mice also feature a hyper-scroll option and Logitech's Unifying receiver, announced earlier this month.

The full-sized Performance MX ($99.99) comes with a micro-USB charging system, four customizable thumb buttons and side-to-side scrolling, which Logitech said is the first time to appear in any of its mice.

The compact Anywhere MX ($79.99) is designed as a travel mouse and comes with a carrying pouch.

Both are expected to be available this month.
