Q2 PC Shipments Decline 5%

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 7/17/2009

Stamford, Conn. - Gartner's second-quarter PC shipment report reported a 5 percent decline for the period worldwide, with the U.S. market dipping 1.2 percent.
The company tracked worldwide shipments at 68.1 million, down from 71.7 million during the same period in 2008. About 16.4 million units shipped in the U.S.
Dell retained its position as the top U.S. PC shipper despite suffering an 18.7 percent decline in units shipped. Hewlett-Packard was No. 1 worldwide on 13.4 million units shipped, and second in the U.S.
Acer enjoyed the most successful quarter among the top five vendors, shipping 74.2 percent more units domestically in the quarter and 34.2 percent more worldwide during the same period.
Apple's shipments rose slightly to 1.4 million in the U.S., while Toshiba's jumped 22.5 percent to 1.1 million.
Worldwide Lenovo took fourth place on the list, shipping 5.7 million units. Toshiba did very well on the world stage, increasing shipments 10 percent to 3.4 million, Gartner reported.
Gartner called these results, "better than expected" and said the numbers were a small sign that the PC market was starting to recover.
