Trane, Schlage Make Z-Wave Connection

Carmel, Ind. — Trane launched its first Z-Wave-equipped thermostat, which can be monitored and controlled from remote PCs and most Web-enabled cellphones through Schlage’s Link keypad lock/home-management system.

Trane and Schlage are both owned by Ingersoll Rand.

The Schlage and Trane products incorporate Z-Wave wireless-network technology, and both are available in select Lowe’s stores and on Lowes.com. They will be demonstrated this week at the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) LineShow event in New York City.

Trane’s $149 Remote Energy Management Thermostat networks with Schlage’s Link System, which lets homeowners remotely monitor and lock/unlock Schlage’s Z-Wave-equipped keypad locks. Link also lets users monitor and control Schlage’s Z-Wave network cameras and light modules.

From a remote location, consumers use a cellphone or PC to access the password-protected Schlage Link portal to adjust the thermostat, which is also programmable for seven days with up to four settings per day. The 4-inch by 5.7-inch by 1.2-inch thermostat, equipped with graphical LCD display, can also be programmed to send maintenance reminders via text or email or send alerts when someone at home adjusts the thermostat.

Schlage’s Z-wave electronic deadbolts and locks let homeowners enter a home by punching in a four-digit code on the lock’s keypad. From afar, homeowners send a lock/unlock signal from a PC or Web-enabled cellphone. Consumers also get email or text notifications when specific user codes are entered on the lock’s keypad, and they can access a 90-day log showing who accessed a specific lock at different times. Schlage’s $299 Link System Starter Kit includes one Schlage wireless deadbolt or lock, a Schlage Bridge, an Ethernet cable, necessary batteries and one Schlage Light Module. The Bridge connects to the home’s existing router and uses Z-Wave wireless technology to transmit data to the wireless lock. Additional Schlage wireless deadbolts and locks are sold separately and finish options include bright brass, satin nickel and aged bronze.

Additional Schlage wireless deadbolts or locks are $199 each. A $12.99 monthly subscription fee is needed for 24-hour remote access to the system and to other connected Z-Wave home-control devices.
