More Android-Based Phones To Arise

New York — Google’s Android OS will appear in more phones in the coming months as well as in netbooks.
In early summer, T-Mobile will offer its second Android-based handset, a spokesperson confirmed.
To date, the carrier sold more than 1 million
3G handsets in the U.S. since the product’s October 2008 launch. About 4,900 applications can be downloaded over the air for use on the phone. T-Mobile did not provide details on the second-generation Android phone.
Separately, Garmin-Asus announced plans to market an Android-based PND-phone in the first quarter of next year. A U.S. spokesperson said the phone would definitely come to the U.S. market next year but perhaps not in the first quarter. For now, Garmin-Asus is planning a
delayed second-half U.S. launch
of two PND phones, the Linux-based G60 and Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional-based M20, both with touchscreens. Garmin-Asus is a joint venture between PND maker Garmin and PC maker Asustek Computer.
Several other companies have also announced plans to launch Android smartphones this year, including Acer, Samsung Electronics and Huawei. U.S. availability hasn’t been announced.
Meantime, laptop-maker Acer announced third-quarter availability of an Android-based netbook, the Aspire One, but U.S. availability couldn’t be determined at press time.
