12-MP Samsung Cameraphone Not For U.S

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 6/1/2009

Seoul – Samsung’s 12-megapixel touchscreen cameraphone, called the Pixon 12, will be available in Europe at the end of June and other parts of the world in August, but it’s probably not coming to the U.S. anytime soon.

“As of right now, there are no plans for it to launch in the U.S.,” a Samsung spokesperson said.

The device would be the first 12-megapixel cameraphone on the global market. Previously, SonyEricsson announced plans for second-half availability of a 12.1-megapixel touchscreen model temporarily called the Idou, although the company wasn’t certain at the time whether it would be sold in the U.S.

In the U.S., the highest resolution cameraphone currently available is Samsung’s 8-megapixel 3G W-CDMA Memoir, sold by T-Mobile, although Sony Ericsson has announced end-of-Q2 availability of its own 8.1-megapixel W-CDMA C905 in the U.S. For its part, Nokia previously announced plans to bring its first 8-megapixel cameraphone to the U.S. The Nokia N86 is due in the second half in the U.S. as an unlocked model.

Samsung’s Pixon 12 features W-CDMA HSUPA high-speed wireless data, WiFi, full-touch 3.1-inch AMOLED screen, and a host of camera-oriented features, including:

  • dedicated camera power button.

  • quick image saving so users can snap the next shot within two seconds of snapping a previous shot.

  • Touch Auto-Focus (AF) tracking, enabling the camera to automatically follow a user-selected focus point while it moves across the screen.

  • sorting of images by tags, file names, ratings, and time.

  • multi-selection feature to call up images in groups rather than one by one.

  • Instant Share to upload images and videos to social networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, MySpace, Photobucket, and Friendster,

  • Xenon flash.

  • and 28mm wide-angle lens.
