Top 25 PC Retailers Post $44.8 Billion In '08 Sales

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 6/1/2009

The 2008 TWICE Top 25 PC Retailer Report saw the majority of its members move up, down or off the list last year, although the top three players remained the same.

The top 25 stores generated $44.8 billion in sales last year, for a small increase of 2.4 percent. This was despite the dramatic falloff in consumer spending that took place during the second half of 2008 as the U.S. and world economies contracted due to the recession. The lack of consumer spending could be readily seen in the 10 percent drop in PC shipments that took place during the fourth quarter, according to the research firm Gartner.

The top retailers on the list, for the most part, shrugged off the world's economic problems. Best Buy, Dell and Wal-Mart topped the list again, with only Dell seeing its sales fall and the new No. 4 Apple posting the most dramatic gains of sales increasing 68 percent to $3.8 billion for the year.
