LG Ships LH55 LCD TV Series

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 5/27/2009

Englewood Cliffs, N.J. — LG Electronics’ said Tuesday it is now shipping its LH55 LCD TV series models, with 1080p, 240Hz resolution and a sleek, silhouette design.

The series, which was first unveiled at International CES, features the 37-inch ($1,400 suggested retail), 42-

inch ($1,800), 47-inch ($2,100) and 55-inch ($3,900) screen sizes. All incorporate LG’s TruMotion 240Hz scanning backlight technology to improve motion picture response time and reducing blurring of fast moving images.

“As the first of our flagship LCDs to be introduced this year, the LH55 offers consumers something better — unsurpassed motion detail for watching sports or movies and playing video games,” stated Peter Reiner, LG Electronics marketing and strategy senior VP. “With TruMotion 240Hz, the LH55 processes fast-moving pictures at lightning speed for a beautiful viewing experience that requires less picture processing and earns the new Energy Star 3.0 rating.”

Where more conventional motion-processing systems use a double process of motion estimation-motion compensation (MEMC) to insert “pseudo” data into the image in order to increase response time, LG said its TruMotion 240Hz technology builds off of the Super In-Plane Switching (S-IPS) panel, which in itself offers fast response times and maintains better color and contrast at off-axis viewing angles. The TruMotion scanning backlight technique improves motion picture response time from 120Hz to 240Hz “to virtually eliminate motion blur,” LG claims.

The sets produce an 80,000:1 contrast ratio.

The LH55 models all comply with Energy Star 3.0 specifications and include Intelligent Sensors that sense the ambient light in the room to adjust color and brightness levels to surroundings. A mechanical on/off switch is added to eliminate standby power consumption.

The sets are ISFccc certified, and include a 10-point white-balance adjustment and color-management system for custom calibration of individual home-theater environments and ambient lighting which can be saved in ISF Day and ISF Night modes.

Other features include:

  • Picture Wizard, which simplifies self-calibration through onscreen reference points for key picture quality elements like black level, color, tint, sharpness and backlight levels;

  • Invisible Speaker System, which has been tuned to audio-expert Mark Levinson for a clean, polished look and enhanced audio with a wider sound field;

  • Clear Voice II, which automatically enhances and amplifies the sound of the human voice frequency range to help keep dialogue audible when background noise swells; and

  • AV Mode II, which includes three AV modes preset to optimize picture and sound settings based on cinema, sports or game content.
