Kodak Teams with T-Mobile, Renames Ofoto Site
Las Vegas— Kodak announced a deal with wireless carrier T-Mobile to let users of its recently announced Wi-Fi- enabled EasyShare One digital camera connect to the carrier's 5,000 hot spots across the country. Consumers who buy the EasyShare One will initially receive a free, camera-specific T-Mobile HotSpot trial. T-Mobile HotSpot subscription plans will be available for the new camera later this year, with pricing and terms to be determined. The company also changed the name of its Ofoto photo sharing Web site, which it acquired in 2001. The new name will be the EasyShare Gallery, reflecting the company's line of imaging hardware, and is effective March 31. The URL will change to www.kodakgallery.com.
PentaWare Announces Imaging Software
Las Vegas— Software vendor PentaWare announced its entry into the digital imaging market at International CES with the introduction of the PentaSuite DigiPhoto software suite. The imaging program lets users compress, encrypt, view, upload or download, store and send image files and contains of a host of programs for more advanced imaging tasks such as the PentaWhiteBoard, which lets users save individual frames captured from AVI, MPG and MOV clips captured by digital cameras. The software is shipping now for a suggested $69.95.
Epson Bows Scanner
Long Beach — Epson introduced two new flatbed scanners last week under its Perfection brand: the 4990 Photo and 4990 Pro. Both offer a built-in 8-inch by 10-inch transparency unit, 50 percent larger than its predecessors, with a moving carriage and lamp for improved film scanning. Both scanners include film holders that support eight 35mm mounted slides, four 35mm film strips up to 24 frames, three to six medium format frames, or two 4-inch by 5-inch frames. The scanners offer a maximum hardware resolution of 4,800 by 9,600 dpi, 48-bit color, up to 4.0 Dmax and Kodak's Digital ICE for image enhancement. The 4990 Photo and Pro will ship in March for estimated street prices of $449 and $599, respectively. The Pro ships with more bundled software.
Plustek Intros New Scanner
Las Vegas— Scanner manufacturer Plustek introduced its new OpticSlim 2420T scanner at CES, here. The unit features USB 2.0 high speed for connectivity and drawing power, a hinged lid for scanning thick books or 3D objects and a cordless/removable TPA adapter for 35mm slides and negatives. The OpticSlim 2420T ships in February for a suggested retail price of $119. It can scan A4-size documents at an optical resolution of 1200 dpi and offers five one-touch buttons on the front panel to copy, OCR, e-mail, scan and one custom button.
Edge Tech Ships Digital Frame
Dallas— DRAM and flash-memory supplier Edge Tech stepped into the digital-frame market with the introduction of its Digital Picture Frame plus MP3 Player. The unit features a 5.6-inch TFT LCD, and slots for SD, MMC, Memory Stick/Pro, Smart Media, CompactFlash Type I & II and MicroDrives. Users can view slide shows or rotate photos on screen in addition to playing MP3 music files via built-in speakers. It will ship this month with a bundled remote control for a suggested $199.99 after mail-in rebate.
Corrections
In the Dec. 6, 2004, issue of TWICE, p. 6, in a story titled “Best Buy Evaluates Photo Processing Effort,” it should have stated that Ritz Camera offers a one hour turnaround time on online-to-in-store orders.
In the Dec. 20, 2004, issue, p. 94, a story titled “Retail Ramps Up Digital Printing” should have referenced numbers from InfoTrends for “prospective camera owners.” Further down, the correct percent of camera owners who print using a retailer's Web site to upload images to pick-up in store is 6.6 percent.
