Kmart Revamps E-Commerce Site

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 12/6/2004

In its first major redesign since 1999, Kmart has “completely overhauled” its e-commerce site, www.kmart.com, to provide easier navigation, an enhanced search function and a wider product assortment, the discounter said.

The company's e-tail store was temporarily closed for business last month in advance of the relaunch, which took place just prior to the Thanksgiving weekend.

The most noticeable changes include the use of fresh graphics and colors and improved page organization, which allows consumers to shop by product category, brand, price and, in the case of consumer electronics, technical specifications. Visitors will also find new online buying guides, and will be able to browse Kmart's weekly circular — all features found on many competitors' Web pages.

As part of its broader assortment, the site's CE section now includes such online-only offerings as rear-projection HDTVs (47W-inch and 55W-inch CRTs by Daewoo for $1,400 and $1,700, respectively); plasma displays (a 42W-inch Daewoo EDTV for $3,500); and notebook computers (by Acer and Averatec, ranging from $1,050 to $1,500).

To herald the relaunch, Kmart.com is giving away $500 a day in merchandise as part of a “Win Your Holiday Wish List” promotion that will run through Dec. 24.
