Printer Makers Go Wide

NEW YORK — Canon and Epson introduced new wide-format photo printers geared for pro photographers and retailers to offer poster-sized presentations and photos.

The units feature a maximum print width of 24 inches.

Canon's ImagePrograf iPF6000S features an eight-color Lucia pigmented ink set, and clocks in 30 percent faster than its 12-color counterpart. It features 4-picoliter droplets, built-in color calibration, an 80GB hard drive with a built-in Web server and a new economy color mode that lets users reduce overall ink usage while maintaining color density.

A new monitor matching mode allows the printer to reproduce images displayed on calibrated monitors.

Also new is a print plug-in for Microsoft Office that lets users add larger-format printing from programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The printer will include PosterArtist 2008 Lite for creating large-format posters. A full version of the program is available for $799.

The printer is available now with a list of $3,295.

Epson's Stylus Pro 7900 incorporates the company's MicroPiezo TFP print head and new UltraChrome HDR inks, which combine to widen the color gamut and double the print speed of the unit vs. previous models, Epson said.

The printer uses 11 individual ink cartridges and features a resolution of 2,880 by 1,440 dpi, 3.5-picoliter droplets, automatic ink switching between photo and matte black, a 2.5-inch LCD screen and compatibility with roll or cut sheet media.

The printer will be offered with an optional in-line spectrophotometer from X-Rite for color calibration and proofing. It is also compatible with Epson's myEpsonPrinter.com service, which enables owners to monitor the printer's consumables and print jobs in real time via the Web.

The service is free while in beta testing.

The 7900 is available this month with a list price of $3,995.
