Apple Sells 1 Million iPhone 3G Models

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 7/14/2008

Cupertino, Calif. — Apple said it sold more than 1 million iPhone 3G models since Friday, despite widespread glitches with phone activations. Users also downloaded more than 10 million applications in same time period from the new Apple Apps store, which offers wireless downloads of iPhone and iPod Touch applications.

CEO Steve Jobs said, “It took 74 days to sell the first 1 million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.” The iPhone 3G, twice as fast and half the price of the original iPhone, launched in 21 countries over the weekend.

Industry pundits say the Apple Apps store — now with 800 native applications, up from 500 only three days ago — may help transform the iPhone 3G beyond a smartphone, into a mini computer that will raise the bar in areas including wireless gaming, Internet Radio, remote-control accessories and GPS.

The Apps Store on the iPhone works over cellular and Wi-Fi networks so it is accessible on the go. Many of the applications are free or less than $10 and may be charged to the user’s iTunes account.
