Cingular Adds Fujifilm Mobile Service

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 9/13/2005

San Francisco — Cingular Wireless announced today that it will incorporate Fujifilm’s Get The Picture Mobile service into its mobile offerings, allowing Cingular customers to send camera phone images to retail outlets for printing.

The service, which costs an additional $2.99 per month, will currently work with 60 compatible Cingular phones. The application, which is downloaded to the handset, is accessed from the photo services menu and will transmit images to participating Get The Picture Mobile retailers located by zip code.

Fujifilm also made improvements to Cingular’s Mobile Postcard service, which uses select Motorola camera phones (V220, V400, V551, V600 and the V3 RAZR) to create personalized postcards. Enhancements include a new wizard-style creation tool, a larger selection of postcard templates, new auto-address look-up, auto-fill city/state information via zip code and a “recent addresses” format that allows users to make multiple postcards in a single session.

Postcards cost $1.99, including postage.

Fujifilm also announced results of a survey it commissioned from NPD Techworld on camera phone ownership and usage. The survey found camera phone penetration increased 200 percent over last year, from seven percent of the U.S. market to today’s 22 percent.

Camera phone usage, however, was less robust with only nine percent of users taking ten or more images a month. Of those pictures, 92 percent are stored in the phone, as wallpaper or in an album; 30 percent are e-mailed to other people through the phone and 26 percent are printed.

Improving the rate of printing would entail improving the resolution and overall picture quality of camera phones, 69 percent of survey respondents said.
