Garmin Tops TomTom In Worldwide PNDs

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 3/19/2008

Reading, U.K. - Garmin replaced TomTom as the world leader in personal navigation devices (PNDs) last year, according to research firm Canalys.

While Garmin has been the top U.S. PND supplier for many years, TomTom lead the market on a global plane, but Garmin increased its role in Europe, last year, doubling European shipments to edge past TomTom in worldwide sales, with 28 percent of the market compared to TomTom’s 27 percent, said Canalys. Total PND sales for 2007 were 34.8 million, it said.

Worldwide market share for PNDs
Year Units Sold Marketshare
2005 5.4 million TomTom 31%, Garmin 18%
2006 14.8 million TomTom 32% Garmin 21%
2007 34.8 million Garmin 28% TomTom 27%

By contrast, TomTom led the market in 2006 with a 32 percent share, compared to Garmin’s 21 percent stake in global PND sales of 14.8 million. For 2005, the split was TomTom 31 percent, Garmin 18 percent, on total sales of 5.4 million, said Canalys.

“Garmin achieved the worldwide No. 1 spot for mobile navigation devices in 2007 by performing consistently well in Europe, more than doubling its shipments on 2006 and increasing its market share, while also retaining its clear lead in the booming U.S. market, which grew to represent 34.7 percent of the total worldwide market in 2007. Garmin had an enviable 47 percent share in the U.S. in 2007, and the market quadrupled in size,” said Chris Jones, Canalys VP and principal analyst.
