HDMI Signal Extenders For CAT-5 Bow

By John Laposky -- TWICE, 5/5/2008

Gefen has begun shipping two new HDMI distribution solutions for high-definition sources and multiple displays that enable the extension of HDMI audio and video beyond its specified limits over industry-standard CAT-5 cable.

The Gefen 1:4 and 1:8 HDMI CAT-5 distribution amplifiers include a sender unit that performs what the company calls "a seamless split of one HDMI input with delivery to multiple displays." Users have the option of ordering small, individual receivers for remote displays placed beyond standard range from the source.

Signals can travel up to 300 feet (at resolutions to 1080i, and up to 150 feet at 1080p. Multichannel audio is delivered alongside the video using two CAT-5 cables that connect the HDMI source to the displays. Both sender and receiver units are powered to ensure an HDCP-compliant HDTV signal at both short- and long-range distances. If users opt to connect their HDMI displays directly to the sender, no additional power is needed.

Gefen's 1:4 (suggested retail $1,999) and 1:8 ($2,999) HDMI CAT-5 amps come with HDMI connection cables, including a 6-foot cable that connects the HDMI source to the sender, and multiple 1-foot cables that link the sender to the HDMI displays connected locally.

New from AudioControl is the latest addition to the company's Active Balanced family of HDMI extenders, the BVHD-10. The unit is composed of the HDD-10 sender and HDR-10 receiver which allows for the extension of HDMI v1.3 signals up to 150 feet over dual standard CAT-5/6 cables.

Key features of the BVHD-10 Includes an HDD-10 driver and HDR-10 receiver which etends 1080p HDMI signals up to 150 feet using standard CAT-5 or CAT-6 cables and will extend 480p, 720, and 1080i signals more than 200 feet, the company said.

It includes and HDCP-compliant signal status LED indicator. The suggested retail is $400.
