Optoma Adds 2nd $999 HD Projector

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 12/3/2007

Optoma unveiled at the recent annual International CES press preview reception a sub-$1,000 720p high-definition DLP video projector, featuring improved color and brightness performance.

The new HD65 will carry a $999 suggested retail when it ships in December and is ultra-compact and light, weighing less than 5 pounds. The projector offers both a smaller size and improved image performance over the company's first under-$1,000 HD DLP video projector — the HD70, which it will replace in the line, said Jon Grodem, Optoma senior product manager.

The tiny projector will offer 1,280 by 720p resolution, 1,200 lumens of brightness, a six-segment color wheel and includes inputs for HDMI v1.3, VGA (for PCs), component video, S-video and composite video.

The UHP bulb life is rated at 2,000 to 3,000 hours.

The company also unveiled the EP1691 mini data projector, which weighs 3.2 pounds and delivers 2,500 lumens of brightness and 1,080 by 768 native resolution. It is shipping now to dealers including Office Depot, Best Buy and Circuit City.

Grodem said the EP1691 ($999 average street retail) "is really targeted for the business traveler that needs to give remote presentations, but it offers amazing color from its four-segment color wheel."
