Optoma Ships Short-Throw Projector

Optoma EX525ST Carries A $1,499 SRP

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/30/2008

Milpitas, Calif. — Optoma introduced this week a short-throw DLP multimedia projector designed for institutional, government and business applications, where space is at a premium.

The Optoma EX525ST (shipping now at a $1,499 suggested retail) will project an image as large as 100 inches at a distance of 4 feet from the wall, the company said, making it ideal for situations where a traditional projector cannot be used or space is limited.

“The EX525ST creates many new opportunities for projector deployment,” stated Jon Grodem, Optoma’s product and marketing director. “The short throw not only produces large images within close distances to the screen, but also allows users to stand closer to the screen without affecting the image. This is important when interactive white board technology is used and when giving presentations in smaller conference rooms.”

To shorten the throw distance, Optoma developed a new optical projection system that incorporates a short-throw lens with aspherical lens elements providing a throw ratio of 0.6:1.

Shortening the necessary projection distance greatly increases the number of options available for installation to include almost anywhere: tabletops, ceilings, walls or even the floor, the company said.

The EX525ST incorporates Texas Instruments’ DLP chipset and BrilliantColor technology.

The projector’s 200-watt lamp provides 2,500 lumens of brightness, and the contrast ratio is 2,500:1.

Connectivity includes: DVI, VGA, S-Video, composite, RS-232, USB and RJ45.
