NEC Snaps With Its First Camera-Phone

Dallas — NEC America launched its first camera-phone for the United States only months after reentering the U.S. wireless market.
The new 525 High Definition, which adds a camera feature to the feature set of the company's current model, became available through AT&T Wireless retail stores on Nov. 20 at $199 to $299, depending upon the bundled service plan.
The 4.03-ounce phone features 100K-pixels, 2X digital-zoom embedded camera with timer. Pictures can be viewed on a 2.2-inch, 65,536-color display. The clamshell unit also features a 4,096-color external-LCD screen to display picture caller ID photos. The device can send and receive photos in jpeg, gif, bmp, and png formats.
The phone operates with internal antenna in the U.S. 850/19,00MHz bands and foreign 900/1,800MHz bands.
Other features include 40-note polyphonic ring tune Yamaha chip. Talk and standby time up to 5.4 hours and 150 hours, respectively.
The phone includes Java for wirelessly downloading games and other applications, a PIM that synchronizes with Microsoft Outlook, and applications such as currency calculator. Other features include wallpaper and animations, MMS, picture caller ID, assignable ring tones and LED colors for incoming calls, internal antenna and WAP 2.0 browser, which accesses WML, cHTML (iMode) and XML sites.
