Ford To Ship HD Radios; Partners With Sony

by Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 1/28/2008

Ford became the first leading car maker to announce it will offer HD Radio and said it will partner with Sony, which was part of a slew of announcements by the Detroit giant at International CES.

Signaling the momentum building for HD Radio, Ford said it will offer HD Radio in new cars direct from the factory in calendar 2009 in models to be announced as either standard or optional equipment.

BMW, Volvo and Hyundai (in the new Genesis) also offer or plan to offer HD Radio. Ford dealers also give consumers the option of buying an HD Radio, but starting in 2009, some will offer HD Radio directly from the factory.

Ford and Sony also announced a partnership where Sony will be the exclusive supplier of branded in-car audio products for all Ford and Mercury vehicles beginning in 2009. The first vehicle in the agreement will be the 2009 Ford Flex that will ship in calendar 2008.

Ford also announced it will expand its Sync car system (see TWICE, Jan. 21, p. 38) and showed the first car with a THX II Certified 5.1 surround sound system; a 2009 Lincoln MKS, at CES.
