Best Buy Recalls Combustible TV, Power Source

Minneapolis — Best Buy has voluntarily recalled a private-label LCD TV and portable power source due to possible fire hazards.
The TV is a 26-inch Insignia IS-LCDTV26 that sold for about $800. Best Buy sold about 13,000 of the sets between August 2005 and June 2006. Two incidents of fire have been reported that were traced to the failure of a component in the TV’s power supply. The fires reportedly caused minimal property damage and minor burns that didn't require medical attention, Best Buy said.
The portable power source, model number RF-INV80, was sold under Best Buy’s Rocketfish brand from July 13, 2008, to Feb. 18, 2009. The company sold about 1,400 of the units, which retailed for about $100. An “unknown possible defect” in the universal AC/DC/USB charger has led to three reports of spontaneous fires during charging, the retailer said, resulting in minor property damage but no injuries. All remaining units have been removed from store shelves and are no longer available for purchase.
Best Buy said it is working closely with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to notify customers who have purchased the products. Owners can call (800) 233-0462 to receive a Best Buy gift card for the value of the items, and returned units will be disassembled and the parts recycled, the company said.
