XM "Roll" Satellite Launch Is A-OK

Staff -- TWICE, 5/21/2001

WASHINGTON — XM Satellite Radio launched the second of its two satellites paving the way for a planned late-summer commercial launch of its satellite radio service.

A spare satellite currently being built is in its final testing phase.

As the second satellite, dubbed "Roll," headed for geostationary orbit, XM's first satellite, "Rock," has already settled into its geostationary orbit and has begun to transmit and receive test signals. It is scheduled to begin broadcasting in mid-May.

Both satellites deliver nationwide coverage using 3,000-watt RF transmitters, making them the most powerful satellites built, XM said. A network of terrestrial repeaters will also supplement them. Both satellites were launched by Sea Launch Co. from platforms in the Pacific.

Meanwhile, rival Sirius Satellite Radio said last week it would raise its monthly subscription price to $12.95 a month. Its prior price was $9.95 a month, which is still XM's subscription rate.
