Sirius/XM Merger Concern on Capital Hill

Washington — Two congressmen expressed concern that the U.S. Justice Department may seek to rush through approval of the Sirius/XM merger, according to Reuters.

Reps. John Conyers and Steve Chabot wrote a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, dated Dec. 11, stating:

"We were dismayed to learn of recent press reports suggesting that Justice Department staff may be trying to rush through the merger before you have an opportunity to fully participate, and that Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Thomas O. Barnett may intend to grant the merger over the objections of department staff," Reuters said.

Although U.S. lawmakers may hold hearings to air concerns about large mergers, they have no direct say in whether the transactions are approved, Reuters said.

  Rush it through? The proposed merger started almost 12 months ago!!! Murdoch acquired the Wall Street Journal in a week. Exxon's merger with Mobil Oil took about a month. Did the NAB get these two knucklehead congressmen?
