HP Adds AMD Quad Core To Line

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 1/7/2008

Hewlett-Packard will not break any new ground in the PC arena during this International CES, but it has tweaked several of its current models with the addition of HD optical drives and the addition of the latest AMD processor.

HP decided to go with AMD's new Quad-Core 64-bit processors in several if its new units because AMD manages to hit a good price point with these chips allowing HP to pass along the savings to its customers, the company said.

HP is taking its Slimline chassis line upscale with the addition of the s3330f, starting price $949. This model will feature an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor 5400+ with AMD Live Smarter Digital Entertainment technology, 2GB or memory, 500GB hard drive, a Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive and a SuperMulti DVD burner with LightScribe technology. Other features include a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT graphics card, NTSC/ATSC TV tuners and high-definition audio.

The s3330f has HP's exclusive removable PocketMedia Drive that can connect to any PC via a USB port.

With the addition of this higher-end model HP's Slimline offerings now range in price from $399 to $949. The company has also added some child-friendly software to its entry-level models to make them easier and safer for kids to use.

HP's latest Pavilion Elite model is the m9150f, $959 street price. This is a full tower configuration that is based on an Intel Core 2 quad processor Q6600. It has 3GB of memory, dual 360GB hard drives along with two empty bays for adding the optional PocketMedia Drive or HP's Personal Media Drive.

The twin optical drive bays hold an HD DVD drive and a SuperMulti DVD drive with LightScribe Technology. On the front panel is a 15 in 1 media card reader, NTSC/ATSC TV tuners as well as an FM tuner with an external antenna.

New in HP's Pavilion Media Center line is the m8330f. This unit incorporates AMD's Phenom 9500 quad-core processor with AMD Live! It has dual 360GB hard drives and a DVD SuperMulti Drive with LightScribe. It has the same amount of memory, graphics card and TV tuner set up as the previously mentioned models. It is priced at $959.

Outside the PC arena the company also showed a new 24W-inch monitor which will carry a $499 price tag. The w2408h has a 1,920 by 1,200 native resolution with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and brightness level of 400 nits.
