Photography As Fashion Statement: New Digicams Stress Beauty & Brains

LAS VEGAS — In a testament to the power of form to sway buyers, digital cameras vendors will break out new designs and a veritable rainbow of colors to entice existing camera owners to trade up to a more fashionable photographic instrument.
Casio's 7-megapixel EX-V7 sports a 7x optical zoom lens (38mm-266mm, 35mm equiv.) that incorporates four varieties of blur reduction technology. It uses a CCD-shifting mechanism alongside "dynamic subject analysis" which measures the speed and direction of a moving subject to set the correct ISO sensitivity and shutter speed. It also employs Casio's Anti Shake DSP and electronic stabilization when shooting videos.
A new version of the company's image processing engine allows for an "auto follow" autofocus feature that keeps moving subjects in focus until the shutter is pressed. The processor also offers users the ability to selectively eliminate noise in designated portions of an image.
The V7 can record video in the H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) format, which allows for more video to be stored on a memory card than traditional MPEG-4 videos at equal quality, Casio said. The camera can silently zoom while recording and audio is captured in stereo sound.
It sports a 2.5-inch LCD screen and aperture/shutter priority modes. Pricing and availability were not available at press time.
Kodak will add an 8-megapixel model to its V-series at the show. The V803 will be available in eight colors, one of the largest color assortments for a single model currently on the market. It sports a 3x zoom lens, MPEG-4 video capture, anti-blur capabilities and Kodak's Perfect Touch image enhancement technology.
The V803 ships in March for a suggested $199. The company will ship a 10-megapixel model, the V1003, for a suggested $249.
Norcent will introduce a new line of digital cameras that the company said were designed specifically for them. The 7-megapixel DCS-760 offers a 2.5-inch, scratch-resistant LCD screen, a 3x optical zoom lens, VGA video recording, and 15 scene modes.
It will ship in the spring for an estimated $199.
Norcent also will bring its second 10-megapixel model to market this month. The 1025 sports a scratch resistant 2.5-inch LCD, a 3x optical/5x digital zoom, VGA video recording, 15 scene modes and a $199 suggested retail price.
