LAVERNE, CALIF. — Nextar has launched a fully featured portable PND (personal navigation device) combined with a rear-vision backup camera at a suggested $260. It joins a handful of similar combinations on the market.
The Nextar 14-BC PND features 4.3-inch screen, text-to-speech pronunciation of street names, and maps of the full United States and Canada. It comes with a camera that attaches to the rear license plate and is wired to the vehicle's backup lights. The camera automatically activates when the vehicle is placed in reverse and sends an image via Wi-Fi to the PND screen, overriding the map image on the display screen.
Backup cameras help drivers avoid backing into children and pets playing behind SUVs and trucks with poor rear vision.
The Nextar 14-BC PND also incorporates an MP3 player, picture viewer, SD card slot, night display, 2-D and 3-D viewing modes, and rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
Nextar sells through such outlets as Bon Ton, Costco.com, Walmart.com and Amazon.com.
