MB Quart: Speakers To Boost Standard

Staff -- TWICE, 11/13/2000

OKLAHOMA CITY -MB Quart used the IASCA finals to present the debut of its state-of-the-art speaker line, which the company claims will set a new industry performance standard in loudspeakers.

Called the QSD series, the line features new woofer cone treatments, advances in temperature stabilization and "the most advanced passive crossover network on the market," according to MB Quart president Keith Lehmann.

The QSD uses a wet powder coating process in which a layer of titanium is applied to the poly-propylene cone "at the molecular level." The process is designed to improve cone stiffness to provide a smoother acoustic rolloff of the woofer and more accurate harmonic reproduction, technical operations manager Darren Grebe said, following the announcement.

Also new is a tweeter with cast-aluminum housing that uses Balanced Temperature Technology. The cast-aluminum helps to maintain an operating temperature of +183 degrees F vs. the conventional temperature of +248 degrees F. This reduces power compression and helps protect the neodymium magnet from losing its magnetic energy, said the company.

The new passive QSD crossover network also uses Balanced Temperature Technology.

"Resistors and capacitors on the crossover can get extremely hot," Grebe explained, "We made the base of the crossover out of aluminum, and we mounted the resistors and all the components of the crossover to the base to dissipate the heat through the base, rather than letting it build up as in all other crossovers."

The QSD crossover incorporates an HPCCR tweeter protection device.

The new line includes 4-, 5.25- and 6.5-inch woofers, which are packaged with the new 1-inch tweeter and QSD crossover network. An add-on set of 6.5-inch midbass drivers and specially designed crossover is also available for a three-way system (when used with the 4-inch components). Subwoofers are planned for the future.

The QSD speakers are expected to ship in April 2001 at an estimated price range between $1,300 and $1,800.
