OPPO Launches 'Up-Converting' DVD

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/10/2005

Start-up consumer electronics vendor OPPO Digital introduced what it calls “a high performance, stylish DVI DVD player for HDTVs and projectors.”

The OPPO OPDV971H DVD player ($249 suggested retail) is being sold direct to consumers and through authorized resellers listed on the www.oppodigital.com Web site. The company is also looking to establish distribution with brick-and-mortar CE retailers.

The OPDV971H features Faroudja's DCDi deinterlacing and scaling technology to up-convert standard-definition video to ED and HD resolution levels.

The DCDi technology will eliminate much of the “jaggie” image artifacts that some up-converters add to diagonal edges in video. Up-converted content is output to HDTV or EDTV displays via a DVI output in the 480p, 540p, 720p and 1,080i image formats.

The player offers a slim design cabinet. It will support DVD video, DVD+/-RW, DiVX, VCD, SVCD, CD+R/-RW, HDCD, WMA, Xvid and JPEG formats. It will also play back material recorded in either NTSC or PAL.

OPPO, which started operations less than a year ago, is currently developing its long-term distribution strategy, a company spokesperson said.

Currently, OPPO's DVD players are available either directly or at Amazon.com.
