Ridata HD DVD Media Slated For July

by John Laposky -- TWICE, 6/22/2006

Diamond Bar, Calif. — Advanced Media will be among the first optical disc manufacturers to ship HD DVD-R blank media in the United States, with Ridata-brand recordable media scheduled for a late July release, concurrent with the first wave of hardware products compatible with the new high-definition media format.

The 15GB, single-layer, write-once HD DVD-Rs will be “competitively priced,” according to the company. The initial SKU will be a single disc sold with a jewel case.

Ridata 30GB dual-layer HD DVD-R and 15GB single-layer rewriteable (HD DVD-RW) media will be brought to market in the fourth quarter.

“This new high-capacity disc allows users to record and enjoy the phenomenal picture resolution of high-definition TV programs as well as satisfy computer users’ demands for huge gigabyte storage,” said Harvey Liu, Advanced Media president. “Advanced Media is proud to be one of the first companies to offer it in the U.S.”

The HD DVD-R medium supports Advanced Access Content System (AACS) AES cryptography. It was developed to overcome the shortcomings of the Content Scrambling System found in DVD video, according to a Ridata release. AACS enables authorized use, prohibits unauthorized copying and distribution, and repairs holes in copy protection.
