DVD Media Sees Style Upgrades

By John Laposky -- TWICE, 5/22/2006

A mature blank recordable DVD category is getting a boost at retail from manufacturers who continue to roll out style-conscious customizable products.

Abcron Corporation today began shipping its PlayO brand printable double-layer DVD+R discs. The 8.5GB discs record at a rate of 2.4x and have a capacity of four hours of DVD-quality video or 16 hours of VHS-quality content. Users can print a full-color image directly onto a disc's surface. The discs are compatible with a wide range of leading inkjet printers, according to the company.

The discs are available in a cake box package of 10, retailing for $24.99.

Verbatim's latest customizable discs feature a glossy white printable surface that, according to the company, provides superior ink absorption and excellent drying properties.

The discs have “a high-sheen surface, similar to the glossy print paper photographers use,” said Ron Hanafin, product marketing manager. “The glossy finish takes printable media to the next level by enabling the reproduction of exceptionally vibrant, high-resolution images and graphics.”

The 4.7GB 16x discs are in single-layer DVD+R/-R format and are available in 20 packs, retailing for $24.99.

Imation is carving out a niche with its water-resistant and smear-resistant inkjet-printable DVDs with AquaGuard surface. The proprietary surface uses nanoparticle technology that grips and holds ink when exposed to water or humidity.

The discs are designed for use with popular desktop printer models as well as inkjet-based disc duplication and printing equipment from companies such as Canon, Condre, Epson and Primera.

Spindle packs of 45 8x DVD-R and DVD+R discs began shipping this month for $59.99

Maxell this month is expanding its line of DVD media with new Maxell DVD Sparklers. The discs feature flecks of reflective material embedded in the surface. The single-layer 4.7GB discs come in five-packs of assorted colors including red, silver, green, blue and black. Pricing has been not finalized.
