Sunbeam Ranges Pulled Off Market

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 6/13/2006

Minnetonka, Minn. — Petters Consumer Brands has voluntarily recalled select models of its Sunbeam-branded gas ranges due to a potential fire hazard.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the ranges, manufactured in Costa Rica by Atlas Industrial between November 2005 and March 2006, can scorch floors due to inadequate heat shielding. Petters has received two complaints of scorched floors, but no injuries or other damage has been reported.

Petters sold about 3,600 of the recalled units to U.S. appliance dealers nationwide between February and May, and is offering free home retrofits on the oven portions of the ranges. The products retailed for between $200 and $400.

Petters entered a licensing agreement last year with Jarden to develop a kitchen appliance line under Jarden’s Sunbeam brand. The opening price point assortment includes top-mount refrigerators, manual-cleaning gas and electric ranges, dishwashers and microwave ovens.

Petters also imports and markets promotionally priced consumer electronics under the Polaroid brand. Corporate parent Petters Group Worldwide, a privately held consumer products developer, acquired Polaroid in 2005. It owns 18 other companies, including Fingerhut and uBid.com.
