Flash-Maker SimpleTech Enters External Hard Drive Arena

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 8/4/2003

Flash memory maker SimpleTech entered the external desktop storage market with its first external hard drive for PCs, the 120GB SimpleDrive.

The SimpleDrive offers USB 2.0 and FireWire connectivity. It features SimpleTech's StorageSync back-up software for Windows, which provides file backup, restoration and synchronization for the entire PC or selected files and folders.

The SimpleDrive delivers transfer speeds of 480MB per second when connected with USB 2.0 and 400MB per second for FireWire connections. The drive itself clocks in at 7200 rpm and is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems.

The unit, which is designed to stand both vertically or horizontally, is shipping now for a suggested retail price of $199.99.

According to Charley Hayes, product marketing manager at SimpleTech, the market for external storage is being driven by the popularity of multimedia computer applications, such as digital photography, compressed music, streaming video and gaming.
