Definitive Displays Speakers For New Flat-Panel Displays

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 1/7/2008

Definitive Technology is among the speaker companies adjusting to the age of the flat-panel TV here at International CES, where it is launching its first two passive five-channel surround bars to complement two existing three-channel surround bars.

The company is also launching its second slim-design powered-tower speaker with built-in subwoofer to complement flat-panel displays.

All three new models are part of the Mythos series of speakers designed to complement flat-panel displays.

The two bar-type Mythos-series speakers are designated as Solo Surround Array (SSA) models. They are the $899-suggested SSA42, designed for 30-inch to 46-inch flat-panel displays, and the $1,099-suggested SSA-50, sized for displays of 50 inches or larger. They ship in May and February, respectively, in aircraft-grade extruded-aluminum chassis available in either black or silver. Shelf- and wall-mounting hardware is included.

Both use proprietary passive technology to "create the illusion that listeners are surrounded by five separate high-performance speakers," the company said.

The SSA-42 drivers include a centered 3.25-inch two-way coaxial driver with 0.75-inch tweeter. The coaxial driver is flanked on each side by four other speakers: one 3.25-inch coaxial, one 3.5-inch full-range driver and two 3-inch full-range surround drivers. Frequency response is 60Hz to 30kHz, and power handling is up to 5x175 watts.

The SSA-50 increases driver size to 4.5 inches and 3.25 inches for the woofers and 1 inch for the tweeters to deliver 50Hz to 30kHz frequency response and power handling up to 5x200 watts.

The new Mythos powered tower is the $1,499-each Mythos STS, due in February to join its bigger brother, the Mythos ST. That model was introduced last year and had been repriced to $1,999 each.

The STS is a smaller version that's 47.5 inches by 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches with polished silver or black aluminum cabinet on a solid granite base. Its driver complement consists of a 300-watt driving a 5x10-inch subwoofer driver, which is flanked above and below by a same-size passive radiator. At the top of the tower, a 1-inch dome tweeter is flanked above and below by a 4.5-inch midrange driver in a D'Appolito array.

The company also plans to show working models of previously announced Reference series home theater architectural speakers. The expanded series gets its second square-baffle in-ceiling LCR and a square in-wall/in-ceiling bipolar surround.
