Mobile Video Gets Best Buy Push

Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 3/8/2004

Best Buy said it is investing heavily in mobile video, installing 12-foot mobile video displays in all of its stores within the next eight weeks.

The display will include six overhead consoles with screens ranging from 7 inches to possibly 15 inches, as well as in-dash DVD/monitors and headrest monitors, said Mike Manske, business team leader for mobile electronics.

"It's a large investment on our side, and we expect to see substantial growth in mobile video this year," said Manske.

The display will also include portable video-in-a-bag type systems, which Manske hoped will lead to upgrade sales down the road.

"One of the reasons we think the video-in-a-bag business is so important is that it attracts first generation consumers for video. Once they get a taste of what it can do, we believe, they'll step up to an in-car system," Manske said.
